The objective of an asbestos type 2 survey is to identify the presence of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) within a building. Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations it is a legal requirement for the dutyholders of business premises to do just that. Increasingly though, homeowners are also using surveys to identify ACMs in their properties as HIP reports highlight the possible presence of ACMs.
There are three types of asbestos survey (1, 2 & 3) with each using different techniques to identify asbestos. The type 2 is an intrusive survey that uses bulk sample analysis to accurately identify the presence of ACMs. Samples of suspect materials are collected using a knife (or similar) and sent off for analysis in a laboratory.
When the results of the analysis are received at the surveying company an report is issued which highlights the presence, location and risk any positive identifications. This report is used as the basis of an asbestos register
A type 2 asbestos survey is the most commonly used and it is best suited to pre-1990 buildings (unless the building is due for demolition or major refurbishment - see Type 3 asbestos survey).
