As with all asbestos surveys, the objective is to identify the presence of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) within a building. This is achieved by walking through the structure and initially identifying suspect materials by eye before taking samples and sending them for analysis at a laboratory.
Asbestos survey reports are used to form asbestos registers which help the dutyholders of premises to manage the ACMs in such a way that they protect their employees from exposure to the harmful fibres found in asbestos products.
In a type 3 asbestos survey the sampling is fully-intrusive. This means that the surveyor will get as far into the fabric of the building as is safe to do. Holes are made in walls and floors in order to access cavities, and cherry pickers are hired to reach high areas which are not normally accessible. These surveys are designed to identify asbestos in buildings that are due for demolition or for major refurbishments. It is essential that there are no surprises once the wrecking ball starts swinging.
