An asbestos register is a document that contains information about asbestos identified within an organisation or building. It differs from an asbestos survey in that it is a working document that changes as and when the status of your asbestos containing materials changes. For example, if you remove or repair a material then the asbestos register should reflect this. Typically an asbestos register will be an electronic document such as a spreadsheet but there are numerous asbestos register software packages available to manage larger registers.

It is important that the information held within your asbestos register is made available to anyone likely to come into contact with asbestos within your property. This may be your own staff or it may be a contractor carrying out works on your behalf. This is why it is important to maintain the document and keep it up-to-date.
Normally an asbestos register would be based on the asbestos surveys that were carried out at your premises. So, normally, it would contain the same details such as;
Additionally your asbestos register should hold a history indicating when changes were made and what they were. It is important to keep a record of any repairs or asbestos abatements that have been carried out.
On our asbestos register software page we have a FREE asbestos spreadsheet that you can download.
All premises should be regularly audited against the asbestos register to ensure that asestos containing materials are still in a good condition and remain undmaged. This will ensue that you are not inadvertently putting your staff at risk. A record of these reinspections should be kept in your register. Many organisations use an asbestos surveying company to reinspect properties every 18 months, especially if there are many high risk materials within your buildings.
